Virginia Tech's newly commissioned Second Lieutenants Nick Roland, Dan DiGiorgio, Nate Carter, Mike Luth, and Charles Gallagher recently graduated the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning and will attend the prestigious Ranger School on November 5, 2007.


13 Aug ‘07- Congratulations to the Army ROTC Freshman Class of 2011 for completing New Cadet Week training at the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.  This year the New River Battalion welcomes over 64 new Freshmen to the Virginia Tech Army ROTC program with over $1 million in awarded scholarships. 


13 Aug ‘07- Army ROTC New Cadets attend the ROTC orientation session of New Cadet Week inside McBryde auditorium. The Class of 2011 has 64 Freshmen and is one of the largest classes in recent history.

Summer 2007 Highlights

- For the second year in a row, VT Army ROTC Cadets achieved the best overall tactical and leadership performance of all six Senior Military Colleges in the nation. They attained overall top performance in Physical Fitness, Rifle Marksmanship, Land Navigation, RECONDO Award, and the number of cadets who exceeded assessment standards. 

- VT Army ROTC sent a record 84 freshmen through senior cadets to summer leadership training and assessment courses across the U.S. and around the world.

- We commissioned a record 49 officers for the U.S. Army this spring and summer.

- 22 Army cadets graduated from U.S. Army Airborne and air assault School; including a VT first of eight freshman cadets.

- 35% of our cadets earned "Exceeds Standards" Leadership Rating during their 32 day national assessment at Ft. Lewis, WA.

- 9 cadets traveled to the USMA at West Point, Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Ft. Hood TX, Hanau and Kaiserslautern Germany, Aberdeen Proving grounds MD and Ft. Leonardwood MO for Platoon Leader training with U.S. Army units.

- Cadet Beach, Cahan, and Byrd each scored over 300 points during the 2007 Leader Development Assessment Course (LDAC). 

- Cadet Kessinger (Radford Nurse Cadet) received three excellence ratings during her first four leadership positions at the 2007 Leader Development Assessment Course (LDAC). 

- Cadet Alberts, Byrd and Beach all qualified expert during during the 2007 Leader Development Assessment Course (LDAC).  


2006-2007 Highlights

-Major Hogeboom is recognized as the U.S. Army Cadet Command Recruiting Operation Officer of the year. This award is given annually to the top Army ROTC recruiter from the 273 college Army ROTC programs.

-Captain Mike Avila, MSIII Instructor, is recognized as the top Army ROTC Assistant Professor of Military Science from among the six Senior Military Colleges.

-Sergeant Major Ferrone and Captain Mike Avila are recognized by Virginia Tech as "Favorite Faculty" as voted by the students. 

- The New River Battalion is the second most popular Army ROTC school choice in the nation. (out of 273 Army ROTC programs)

- Eleven New River Battalion Cadets from Virginia Tech and Radford University are commissioned during separate ceremonies on 14 and 15 December 2006. 

- Radford University President Penelope Kyle and Major General Jerry Allen, Commandant of Cadets for the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, attend the Radford Army ROTC commissioning ceremony.

- Virginia Tech was the top performing Senior Military College during the 2006 Leader Development Assessment Course (LDAC). 

- Army Ten-Mile team finishes second in the ROTC division at the 22nd Army Ten-Miler held in Washington, D.C. Over 40 ROTC teams competed in the team competition. 20,000 runners and 400 teams participated.

- 2LT Cynnara Mafnas scores a 360 on her  APFT at LDAC, highest score in her regiment of nearly 350 cadets.

- Seven Cadets score over 300 points during the Leader Development and Assessment Course.

- A third of the Virginia Tech Army ROTC Cadets who attended LDAC earned the RECONDO badge

- Nearly 40% of the Virginia Tech Army ROTC Cadets who attended LDAC earned an overall Excellence rating.

- Collectively the Virginia Tech Cadets averaged 10 points higher than the national APFT average at LDAC.


2005-2006 Highlights

- Army ROTC Cadets hold the highest collective grade point average of any Virginia Tech ROTC program.  The Army ROTC Cadets averaged a 3.02, the university average was 2.87 and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets average was 2.91.

- Of the nine Ranger Regiment Company Commanders three are Virginia Tech Army ROTC Alumni. 

- Cadet Derrick Anderson completes the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) as the Top Cadet in his Regiment.  He is one of 13 cadets nationwide to receive this honor.

- Cadet Steven Schuerman scores a 343 on the Army Physical Fitness Test at the 4th Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition. He scored higher than nearly 300 of the Brigade's most physically fit cadets.

- Congratulations to the Ranger Challenge Team for being selected to attend the prestigious Sandhurst Competition held annually at West Point, New York.

- Over half of the Spring 2006 VTCC leadership positions are filled by Army ROTC Cadets

- Cadet Derrick Anderson is named 2005 Homecoming King

- Cadet Michael Grogan and Cadet Jeremy Lewis each received educational delays for Law School and Veterinary School respectively

- 40 out of 40 Senior Cadets requested and will receive an Active Duty commission upon graduation 

- One freshman cadet improved his PT score from 80 to 250 (he now scores 340 on the extended scale)  while loosing 30 pounds and maintaining a 3.6 GPA.  He earned a 3.5 year campus based scholarship valued at over $70,000.

- Army ROTC Cadets participated in the Army Ten-Miler

- Army ROTC Cadets attend the October 2005 Martinsville, Virginia NEXTEL Cup Race

- Army ROTC Cadet Members of the Highty-Tighties play at the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, Roanoke St. Patrick's Day Parade, Virginia Gubernatorial Inaugural Parade and Mardi Gras Parade

Qualified students will earn a 2 year full-tuition scholarship.
